The Pisces by Melissa Broder

A funny, dark, messy rollercoaster of a novel about sex and angst and searching for connection in a post capitalist society. Having split up with her boyfriend on a whim then instantly craving him, Lucy goes to stay in Venice Beach to work on a PhD she doesn't believe in. After a string of compulsive Tinder hook ups and dysfunctional group therapy meetings, Lucy falls for a mysterious man she meets on the rocks and they begin a steamy relationship. Broder's confessional prose contrasts knowing satire on the nothingness of consumerism with temptation of otherworldly myth as escape from it. This book is about compulsion, filling the existential void, and how what we've been programmed to search for can also annihilate us. Highly recommended!
