Strange Labyrinth: a walk through Epping Forest with Will Ashon
April 9, 2017 @ 2:00 pm£4
In litter-strewn Epping Forest on the edge of London, might a writer find that magical moment of transcendence? He will certainly discover filthy graffiti and frightening dogs, as well as world-renowned artists and fading celebrities, robbers, lovers, ghosts and poets. But will he find himself? Or a version of himself he might learn something from? Strange Labyrinth is a quest narrative arguing that we shouldn't get lost in order to find ourselves, but solely to accept that we are lost in the first place. It is a singular blend of landscape writing, political indignation, cultural history and wit from a startling new voice in non-fiction.
Join us for this very special walking talk led by Will Ashon, a ramble through the undergrowth and a talk with a particular focus on huts, dens and houses as prisons and escape pods, with special reference to T.E. Lawrence (of Arabia) and John Clare. Nods to Ken Campbell, Penny Rimbaud and Crass, Jacob and Margaret Epstein and various other people who make an appearance in the book.
This event will be a circular walk (at a leisurely pace) including a pub stop, total duration will be around 3.5 hours. Please note - the forest could be a bit muddy under foot, please wear wellies or walking boots just in case.
