Join us at Sutton House for a very special joint event with Max Porter and Cathy Rentzenbrink, discussing their debut books, Grief is the Thing with Feathers and The Last Act of Love,
Max Porter's extraordinary debut - part novella, part polyphonic fable, part essay on grief - combines compassion and bravura to dazzling effect. Full of unexpected humour and profound emotional truth, Grief is the Thing with Feathers was shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize and the Guardian First Book Award 2015 and marks the arrival of a thrilling new talent.
Cathy Rentzenbrink's memoir The Last Act of Love is an unflinching and powerfully told account of family, love and loss and a close sibling relationship. Her skill as a writer is her ability to unearth precise and agonising details quietly with little self pity. Despite its tragedy, her story is told with dignity, strength and an enormous heart. The Last Act of Love was shortlisted for the Wellcome Book Prize 2016.
Max Porter is a senior editor at Granta Books and Portobello Books. He previously managed an independent bookshop and won the Young Bookseller of the Year award. He lives in South London with his wife and children.
Cathy Rentzenbrink was born in Cornwall, grew up in Yorkshire and now lives in London, where she works as Contributing Editor for the Bookseller and as a writer and journalist.
Max and Cathy will be in conversation with Francesca Main.
