Hot on the heels of the FT’s news that Hackney’s Burberry Factory Outlet is to be joined by Prada, Gucci and Dior – really, check this out – China Mieville thankfully returns to Hackney this Tuesday to look into, and well beyond, the phenomenon some are calling ‘Gucci in the Ghetto’. He is joined by Suzanne Moore to discuss his new book, London’s Overthrow. While the title is worthy of any science fiction novel, this one is is rendered all the more apocalyptic by being entirely true.

In other news, I went for a walk this morning past the old Duke of Wellington on Morning Lane – now Pringle – and found this:

That’s really what they wrote on top of the big sheep.

Anyway, don’t forget that China M and Suzanne are at Sutton House this Tuesday at 7pm. Get your tickets in advance from the bookshop to ensure you definitely get a seat. Email us or pop into the bookshop to reserve them.

Gaslight tales of rooftop escapes, men and women snatched in broad daylight, patients shut in coffins, a fanatical cult known as the Abode of Love…The nineteenth century saw repeated panics about sane individuals being locked away in lunatic asylums. With the rise of the ‘mad-doctor’ profession, English liberty seemed to be threatened by a new generation of medical men willing to incarcerate difficult family members in return for the high fees paid by an unscrupulous spouse or friend. And contrary to popular modern belief, the madwoman in the attic was at least as likely to have been a madman.

Who Rules South Africa?

With authors Paul Holden and Martin Plaut, chaired by Andrew Feinstein

5th September at 7pm

Tickets £3

South Africa is a country poorly understood in the wider world. There are two main views of the country that persist in the international consciousness and which are often propagated by South Africans themselves. One view holds that after the end of apartheid South Africa’s problems were at an end. The other claims that a coterie of criminals is turning one of Africa’s few success stories into another Zimbabwe. Both are inaccurate...

This book provides a balanced look at the country and points to the real centres of power, which do not include its government. This extraordinary book is the true story of post-apartheid South Africa.

Martin Plaut is the Africa editor of the BBC World Service News and has been reporting on continent for more than 25 years. He has written widely on the Horn of Africa and southern Africa.

Paul Holden is a South African historian, researcher, writer, and resident of Hackney. He has published three books to date, including two critically acclaimed books on the South African ‘Arms Deal.’ Holden currently works alongside former ANC MP and whistleblower Andrew Feinstein investigating corruption in the global arms trade.

Andrew Feinstein is a former African National Congress MP who served in South Africa’s first democratic parliament. Feinstein resigned from Parliament after his efforts to investigate South Africa’s notorious ‘Arms Deal’ were blocked by party chiefs, which he discussed at length in his best-selling memoir, After the Party. In 2011, Feinstein published The Shadow World, the first in-depth study of the global arms trade in over thirty years. The book was a critical success, garnishing positive reviews in media outlets around the world. He is the co-founder of Corruption Watch, an NGO dedicated to investigating corruption around the world.

Tickets £3

The Art of Dissent: Adventures in London’s Olympic State brings together a body of work that has emerged in response to the arrival of the Olympics in East London.

Artists, writers, film makers, academics, photographers and activists intervene in the dominant discourse, language and images of regeneration and the Games. The book examines both the political economy of the mega-event and the silenced history of Lower Lea valley, making a powerful case against the politics of erasure and the corporatisation of urban space. Issues of land grab, displacement, military urbanism and exceptional measures of legal protection are explored through essays, images, poetry, fiction and installations.

Join us for an evening with Hackney based artist Hilary Powell and writer and researcher Isaac Marrero and a selection of contributors including Jude Rosen, Andrew Bailes, Alberto Duman and Alistair Siddons.

The book is a real Hackney production – published and designed in Hackney Wick, and with a cover by Stephen Gill and Hackney Wick (a collaboration between photographer and earth in the photographic series ‘Buried’).

A People’s History of London
Lindsey German and John Rees come to Pages
Wednesday 4th July at 7pm

A People’s History of London, by Lindsey German and John Rees is a look at London from Roman times t0 today. It is not the story of kings and princes, or of the rich and powerful, but of the people of the city who have time and again campaigned and fought to make the city a better place. Its story is of defeating the fascists at Cable St in 1936, of the Peasants’ Revolt which was played out in London, of the young immigrant women matchgirls who struck in 1888, and of the squatters and campaigners today.

The authors have lived in Hackney for many years. They are both active socialists and campaigners in the Stop the War Coalition.
